Measure before sizing
Estimate CPU, memory, storage, and transfer from the application’s observed workload. Separate peak demand from steady use, and consider the operating system, database cache, and background jobs.
Match the isolation model
A VPS provides virtualized resources and can be a good starting point for many applications. Dedicated hardware can suit workloads requiring a physical server allocation or a specific hardware profile. Neither choice removes the need to design backups and recovery.
Write down service requirements
Specify operating system, region, IP requirements, network transfer, backup, remote management, expected setup time, and support needs. Ask which items are included and which require a separate service.
Plan the first month
Set a baseline, secure access, apply updates, verify backups by restoring a test copy, and review resource use after real traffic arrives. Leave room to adjust the configuration based on evidence.
